History of the Garden

The story of the garden begins at the end the 19th century, when Gerolamo Pirinoli, an industrialist from Intra, today part of Verbania, on the opposite shore, in order to give work to the many unemployed from the eastern side, started the building of the impressive walls which border the lake.

The walls were constructed using granite from the quarries of Baveno, where the pink veining is much sought after.

Each stone dressed by hand, the long curving wall borders the lake for approximately 1000 metres. Along its length, there are several sets of steps down to the water and two small ports.

Further along towards the southern end of the lake, a stone bishop's mitre was built to prevent horse drawn barges carrying sand being pulled along the edge of the property.
